Apolipoprotein B and Apolipoprotein A1
Apolipoproteins bind to lipid (fat) particles to carry them throughout the bloodstream. There are two main apolipoproteins: apo B and apo A. Apo B is the main component of LDL particles (bad cholesterol), while apo A is associated with HDL (good cholesterol).
Measuring Apo B and Apo A levels enables us to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease by examining the different forms of cholesterol carried in the blood.

Associated tests | Related tests include the following:
|
How is it done? | Blood sample, usually taken from a vein in the arm. |
How long before I get the results? | Results are usually ready in a day. It may take longer to receive your results. |
What does an abnormal test result mean?
High values of Apo B:
Increased Apo B levels are one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Apo B levels can be elevated for various reasons:
- Diabetes
- Certain diseases affecting the kidneys
- Hypothyroidism
- Pregnancy
- Poor diet
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Certain medications (e.g., certain hormones)
Low values of Apo B:
In most cases, a low Apo B result is considered a good thing since higher levels are associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. Other factors that can cause low Apo B levels include:
- Hyperthyroidism
- Malnutrition
- Weight loss
- Surgery
Low values of Apo A:
Low Apo A levels may be observed in individuals with certain illnesses (e.g., heart, kidney, or liver disease). Other reduction factors are modifiable such as smoking and uncontrolled diabetes.
What you should know before going for this test
When you go in for a blood test or any other medical exam, it's always a good idea to bring a complete list of any prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, or natural health products you're taking. Unless otherwise advised, it's best to take your medications as usual on blood test days. If in doubt, don't hesitate to talk to your healthcare professional.
